Whether you are looking for a family-friendly beach with numerous amenities or a quiet and secluded stretch of white sand, Malta can cater to your desire. Here are 10 of the best beaches in Malta to help you pick a destination.

1 – Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is one of the most beautiful beaches in Malta. Located between the main island and Comino, the shallow bay features azure water.

Popularised in blockbuster films such as Troy, Blue Lagoon is a haven for snorkelers, divers and windsurfers.

This picturesque site is easy to access for those traveling around on a yacht charter. Spend the day, swimming and snorkeling, or sunbathing on the deck while admiring the view.

2 – Peter’s Pool

Malta’s east side is busy but you can still find peace in a location not overloaded with tourists: Peter’s Pool. If you enjoy cliff diving into crystal clear waters and snorkeling among the fish, this is the place to be.

Located near Marsaxlokk market, this little secluded inlet is protected by steep white cliffs and surrounded by beautiful wild plants and flowers.

At the sunset, the yellow sunbeams made the spot being golden colored. 

The way the waves carved the rocks is fascinating. Take a swim or sit on the sandstone, and enjoy the stunning surroundings. Listen to the sound of the ocean and unwind.

3 – Ghajn Tuffieha Bay

Sometimes called Riviera, Ghajn Tuffieha Bay is a wonderful sandy red beach in the northwest part of Malta. It is a short distance south of Golden Bay and quieter.

It is Malta’s best beach to go surfing. You can also explore the caves around the area with a kayak.

Surrounded by craggy cliffs, the peaceful cove is breathtaking. The clay slopes provide a dramatic contrast to the blue sea below.

On top of the cliffs west of Għajn Tuffieħa bay, there is one of the seven towers built by the Knights Hospitaller in 1637.

4 – Golden Bay

Previously known as Military Bay, Golden Bay (Il-Mixquqa) is one of the most popular sand beaches on Malta’s north-west coast. It belongs to the same chain of beaches as Ghajn Tuffieha. 

This beach ticks a lot of the right boxes for holidaymakers. This unspoiled area provides also excellent facilities.

The creamy beach slopes invite you to rest while others can make a sandcastle or enjoy water sports. The crystal clear waters are also perfect for swimming and snorkeling. 

Famous for the spectacular sunset, Golden Bay is a popular spot BBQs and beach parties. 

5 – Paradise Bay

Located in the North-western side of Malta, Paradise Bay really does live up to its name.

The soft sand beach, the calm water, and the shining sun make this place a gem.

This bay has excellent facilities and nothing beats a freshly prepared cocktail on the sand. Enjoy the views of Comino and Gozo while the sun warms you while you are resting on the soft sandy beach.

At night, beach parties are common in Paradise Bay. Have a chilled glass of Rosé on your catamaran charter after a day of scorching sun and adventures.

6 – St George’s Beach

Located in St Julian’s, George’s Bay is a popular Maltese holiday destination. The small fishing village north of Valletta is famous for its luxury hotels, fine restaurants, and trendy nightclubs in Paceville.

Compared to Malta’s northern beaches, St. George’s Bay does not have the same stunning surroundings. But it is in the middle of the main entertainment hub on the island.

Hang out at night with friends sitting on the white sand beach or sip a drink in one of the bars surrounding the bay. It is a nice place to chill out. 

7 – Qawra Point Beach

Most tourists go to Bugibba Perched Beach. This very family-friendly area is always very busy because it provides so many facilities and attractions such as the National Aquarium and Bugibba Water Park nearby.

We prefer to recommend Qawra Point Beach for a beautiful natural view. It is not your typical sandy beach but it’s perfectly located within a stone throw of Bugibba.

This pebble beach has a natural pool you can swim in and a few easy sea access. The water is amazingly clear, so snorkeling is a must! The views out to sea and along the coast are really worth the visit.

You can also enjoy scuba diving in Qawra Reef, an ideal spot for beginners and intermediate level divers.

8 – Mellieha Bay

Also known as Ghadira Bay, Mellieha Bay is one of the largest sandy beaches in Malta.

It features amazing sand and wonderful waters when you need to cool down, take a dip or dip a toe. 

Located in the northern part of the Island, this area does not have any underwater currents and hardly ever experiences rough seas.

The shallow water makes the beach one of the most family-friendly beaches in Malta.

There are also plenty of eateries and bars along the beach.

Nearby you can visit the Ghadira Nature Reserve which is a stopover for migratory birds.

9 – Gnejna Bay

If you’re longing for a place to relax and unwind, head to Gnejna Bay.

It is the third sandy beach of the chain of beaches in the area, together with Golden Bay and Ghajn Tuffieha.

This is a little more off the beaten track compared to the tourist beaches.

It features an orange sandy beach with a spectacular view. There is also a stretch of flat limestone rock ideal for swimming and sunbathing if you prefer to avoid the sand.

If you are looking for a nudist beach, head to the bay’s northern side in a for an isolated strip of sand under the steep hill.

10 – Ramla Bay

Meaning “Red Beach” in Maltese, Ramla I-Hamra is the biggest beach of Gozo. It provides magnificent views of the islands of Gozo and Comino.

The warm and inviting waters are great for swimming and snorkeling. It is a great place to stop and relax when exploring this island.

If you hike to the Calypso cave nearby, you can admire the view of the bay from the cave. When Ramla Bay has too crowed for you, sail to San Blas Bay a smaller stretch of red sand on Gozo’s northeast coast.
