Why did you choose the name “Windward Islands”?
The inspiration came to me while at sea. We were sailing in the Grenadines, which form part of the Windward Islands. This group includes numerous islands, such as Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Dominica, and Martinique—each a gem for sailors. The name “Windward Islands” felt natural to me, not only because of my affection for these islands but also for the beauty and musicality of the name.
Where do you come from?
Ironically, I come from the heart of the land, where the only waves of global renown belong to a famous drink : Champagne in France. There are countless parallels between the land and the sea, between sailors and farmers. I’ve had many chances to observe this when returning to the region of my childhood and speaking with farmers and winegrowers. It’s about endurance, maintaining the right mindset, never giving up, holding steady, and knowing when to pull ahead. It’s also about teamwork, yet embracing solitude, and, of course, being in tune with nature, which provides us with such profound emotions and enjoyment!
How did you get into yachting?
Although Champagne isn’t by the sea, it does have the beautiful lakes of the Orient Forest. As a child, I joined a sailing club, and those 5,000 hectares of water became my favorite playground.
What inspired you to become a yacht broker?
After discovering a passion for sailing at a young age, I earned my merchant marine diploma. Then one day, I decided to combine my skills as a skipper with the emerging technology of the Internet. About 25 years ago, I launched the world’s first boat rental website. I still vividly remember the excitement and surprise of receiving our first booking request from halfway across the world—a customer wanting to reserve a boat in the West Indies. That moment is unforgettable.
What is your favorite boat, or do you have one in particular?
My favorite boat? At the top of the list is always my next acquisition! For a passionate yachtsman like me, the best is yet to come.
